How To Create A Elevator In Minecraft
If you find yourself creating a building of some sort in Minecraft, you might get tired of going up and down trying to reach the top or bottom of your structure. Well, you can create yourself an elevator that uses water to propel you upwards or downwards that will save you a lot of time and headache! Depending on the size of your structure, you can do this pretty quickly, and it can even make for a pretty nice feature of that building you are making.
This method of creating a Water Elevator should work in just about every version of Minecraft, including: 1.16, 1.17, Bedrock, Xbox One, PE, Java, and PS4.
Items Required
Most items are pretty simple to get, but you will need a few specialty blocks that will make the elevator move you up or down.
- Any blocks (Glass, Wood, Dirts, etc.)
- Water Bucket
- Kelp
- Magma Block (To make an elevator that goes down)
- Soul Sand (To make an elevator that goes up)
- Signs
Most of the stuff is pretty easy to find as long as you have an ocean biome nearby. However, if you want to make an elevator that goes up, then you will need to travel into The Nether!
Magma Blocks can be found in a variety of places, including: ocean ravins, underwater caverns, underwater ruins, ruined portals, and in The Nether. It can be mined like most other blocks, but you will need to use a pickaxe or you won't receive the block!
Soul Sand is the item that makes this whole operation a bit more complicated. You will need to get to The Nether, which requires you to have some obsidian to make the portal.
Making a Water Elevator
Time needed:10 minutes.
To make a water elevator in Minecraft, you will need blocks that will make up the structure of the elevator. These can be wood, dirt, brick, cobblestone, or whatever suits how you'd like it to look. You will need a bucket and access to water to fill it. Kelp is required, but will not permanently be apart of the elevator. You will then need to gather one Magma Block and/or one Soul Sand block. Magma will make an elevator that goes down, and Soul Sand will make one that goes up! Finally, two to four Signs will be used to keep the water in place.
- Create the Structure
You will be pretty much just creating 3×3 structure and building it as high as you want the elevator. You can use pretty much any block, and you just need to make an entrance at the bottom and top of the elevator. You can also leave the top open if you just want to enter/exist from the ground. One thing to keep in mind is that at the very bottom you will need something like sand or dirt to plant the Kelp.
- Add Signs
Once you've got your structure built, You will want to place two signs at the entrance of your elevator. This will keep the water inside, and not flood the interior of your building.
- Add Water
Head to the top of your elevator and place water where you want to enter and exit. You can make an entrance here similar to the bottom where the signs are located, but this is not required.
- Plant the Kelp
Go back down to the bottom of your elevator and place your Kelp into the ground. Go into the water and continue placing kelp until you reach the top of the water column. Kelp has to be placed in each water block, because it converts the water into a different state. Once you've added all of that Kelp, go back to the bottom and break the Kelp. The water will retain its altered state!
- Add a Magma or Soul Sand Block
It's time to add functionality to your elevator. Go to the bottom of it and break out the block below the final water block. Place a Magma Block if you want the elevator to go down, or place Soul Sand to make the elevator propel you upwards! If you've gotten this right, you will start seeing bubbles flowing in the direction the elevator will take you.
- Add a Second Elevator
You will likely want the ability to go up and down, so you can build a similar structure next to your first one. Just build it exactly the same, and place the block you didn't use in the first one. This will now allow you to move up and down easily without having to build ladders!
